Since the 17th century, images and interpretations of Las Meninas have accumulated, defining it as ‘the theology of painting’, ‘the culmination of modern illusionism’, ‘a masterpiece of painting and meta-painting’, a favourite subject for art historians and critics, etc.
This book, compiled by art historian Fernando Marías, brings together, with the aim of clarification, the best works of recent years and some of the most controversial on this authentic pictorial paradigm. Philosophers such as Michel Foucault and John R. Searle, photography scholars such as Joel Snyder, ‘Velazqueans’ such as Jonathan Brown, art historians such as J. A. Emmens, Leo Steinberg, Svetlana Alpers and Victor I. Stoichita, and even cultural historians such as Norbert Elias, have all contributed to enlivening this debate and revealing “other Meninas” to the reader and the viewer.
